Your Guide to the 24th Annual KTRU Outdoor Show

Get hyped!  On Saturday, April 11th, this year’s installment of KTRU’s Outdoor Show will be live in the Central Quad starting at noon!  There will be food trucks including Oh My Gogi!, Golden Grill, Churrasco Truck and Muiishii Makirritos all day long, free beer for those who are 21+, and best of all, free music lasting all day!  Check out our preview of the bands below!

Fire Alarm

The winner of the Battle of the Bands, Fire Alarm is a Rice band from Will Rice College.  Show up at noon to support Rice music!

Fat Tony

A Houston local, Fat Tony has made a name for himself as a hip-hop artist and DJ.  The winner of the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013 Houston Press Music Awards Best Underground Hip Hop Award, Fat Tony is a Houston veteran and has performed at Rice previously at the Matchbox Gallery.  Having been featured on tracks with artists like Das Racist and A$AP Rocky, Fat Tony is a must-see performer at this year’s show.

Deep Cuts

Hailing from the Houston area, Deep Cuts fuse earworm pop with Latin rhythms to create a beautiful, upbeat sound.  Their debut EP, Love Grows, tells the story of Houston life and Houston frustrations.  Think Vampire Weekend dipped in the warm Gulf Coast waters.

Heaven Spacey

Imagine taking a cruise on a luxury ship, except you’re in the future and it’s a spaceship – Heaven Spacey is the lounge music that’s playing in all the bars and restaurants on board.  Floaty, futuristic-sounding instrumental beats conjure up images of a warm summer night spent chilling.  Perfect music for laying out on the lawn with your friends.

Oakland-area band Stalls is out to prove that rock and roll isn’t dead, and they’re succeeding.  Thick, rolling bass lines, crunchy guitar riffs and vocals that conjure up the tough, leather jacket wearing badass from 80s action movies are the hallmark of this group.  If you’re a fan of rock at all, you won’t want to miss these guys.

Ex Hex

Not to be confused with the XX, Ex Hex is a self-described all-girl pop-punk band.  Combining the in-your-face energy of rock with drifting, chilled-out indie pop reminiscent of bands like Beach House, Ex Hex swings perfectly between get up and dance and sit down and relax.

A Berlin-born DJ, Objekt’s Facebook page describes his music as “adventures in machine music built to make subs rattle and feet wiggle; a convoluted mess of elektrology and teknology, 3-step, bass-core, post windmill, proto-minimal wankstep, gondola, shithouse, acid wonk, ambient gabber, no more, no less. constructed by tj hertz in berlin.”  We have no idea what any of that means, but we’re goddamn excited to find out.

Bok Bok

Hailing from London, Bok Bok is a grimy house producer and DJ.  He brings a sound you would expect to hear in a secretive, underground club nightclub where you have to know someone to get in.  Get ready to nod your head and move your feet to Bok Bok’s beats.

An up-and-coming star, rapper GoldLink draws heavily on 90s R&B fused with modern, progressive production to create something like you’ve never heard before.  Thought provoking lyrics and groovy rhythms make GoldLink the perfect way to end the day at the Outdoor Show.

O-Week 2015: Whose Theme Takes the Cake?

Themes have been chosen and advisors have been picked; O-Week 2015 is upon us. This year, both Baker and Lovett have opted for the graphic ‘O’ in ‘O-Week’.  It’s a risky decision, but will it pay off?  Share your vote below!
